Cold front affects cattle in Azuero
October 23, 2007
Yesterday, cattle farmers with ranches located on Azuero’s western range reported the death of
approximately 20 cattle, due to the cold front that has been striking the zone for the past 22 days.
Manglillo and Torio are the communities where the cattle have died. For over three weeks rain and
low temperatures have been preventing the cattle from grazing.
Aristides Cedeño, owner of a local ranch, commented that the grass has begun to dry out front
and that the cattle stay below the trees due to the cold, causing them to become malnourished.
Cedeño reiterated that the constant rain in the area, possessing an elevation of around 1000
meters, has led to the death of 20 cattle.
The producer also mentioned that the area currently has no communications due to the mud
slides and river overflow, including areas that are only reachable by horseback.
The director of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) in Los Santos, Analeidys Chen, said
that after receiving the information they have initiated an investigation.
He assured that they will coordinate with the department of animal health for the report on the
cattle.
